History

  • 1519–37: Castle construction
  • 1547–59: West wing and second floor of the chapel
  • 1669–85: Louis XIV completes the building, then abandons it
  • 1670: Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme by Molière is staged at Chambord
  • 1748: The Maréchal de Saxe acquires Chambord. On his death, two years later, the château yet again falls into decline
  • 1840: Chambord is declared a Monument Historique
  • 1970s: Chambord is restored and refurnished, and the moats once again dug out.
